Fossil is a series of ink-jet porcelain tile by Italian manufacturer Refin Ceramiche, based on the winning concept from their 2014 Create Your Tile design competition. The competition encouraged the use of porcelain tile as a creative medium and drew over 800 entries of tile design concepts from professionals across the globe. The winning concept came from a young Polish designer, Kasia Zareba, whose original sketches were inspired by the physical impressions left by the grooved, coiled shells of extinct sea creatures called ammonites.
The Fossil Collection has been produced in 5 hand-drawn patterns, available in 3 colors, that create an optical illusion of depth and serve as a translation of the prehistoric imprints left by plants and animals in rock formations. The shading resembles natural stone, resulting in a modern interpretation of marble.
"In the subtle motifs, one's imagination can see different figures. They bring to mind the regularities of form found in the natural world." - Kasia Zareba
Fossil received the 2015 IIDA/HD Product Design Competition award in the Hard Surface Flooring category. It also received the HD Expo 2015 Best of Competition Award.
