Innovation that originated by tapping into the past – by exploring art, culture and traditional majolica. With Shades, each brushstroke captures a delicate, almost trembling and childlike work of art. Shades won best Hard Flooring product at NYCxDESIGN Awards.

About Gordon Guillaumier

Gordon Guillaumier was born in 1966 in Malta. In 1989 he moved to Milan to study industrial design and design management at IED and Domus Academy and later collaborated with architect Rodolfo Dordoni. In 2002, based on his freelance design activity, he opened his private design studio in Milan. Since, he has worked on various projects as design manager and art director, namely Driade for the Altantide e DHouse collections, bathroom accessories for Dornbracht Interiors, kitchens for Rational and Elt, outdoor furniture for Roda and handles for Pamar. Gordon has also designed furniture, lighting and objects for Arketipo, Bosa, CasaMilano, Desalto, DeVecchi, Elica, FontanaArte, Foscarini, Frag, Matteo Grassi, Mazzega, Montina, Minotti, Nobili Rubinetti, Pamar Roda e Varaschin.

With the Shades Collection, Guillaumier explored the newest frontiers of digital printing to give life to floors and surfaces of artistic inspiration. He wanted to capture the freedom and spontaneity of water-painting, a technique where irregularities and imperfections are closely linked to the manual process and represent an added value. The collection realistically replicates the delicate and imperfect signature of the designer’s brushstroke and the overlapping of colours creating unique nuances.

ABRASION RESISTANCE

High

This material has relatively high abrasion resistance. It rates as a 7 or higher on the Mohs scale. Quartzite or granite typically fall into this range. This material is less likely to scratch than marble, limestone, onyx, slate, etc.

ABSORPTION

Low

This material is virtually non-porous. No sealer is required and it is less likely to stain.

ACID SENSITIVITY

Minimal

This material is minimally sensitive to acids. It will not acid etch or lose its surface sheen when exposed to acidic liquids such as lemons or tomatoes.

FREEZE-THAW

Vertical Exteriors

Due to this material's texture, its Abrasion Resistance rating, color fastness and tensile strength, this material is suitable for vertical exterior applications where freeze-thaw cycles are a concern. Use TCNA standards for setting in exteriors and consult an engineer regarding fastening systems and tensile strength required for your project. This material is not suitable for exterior paving applications.
