Azulej

Azulej is a series of glazed porcelain tile designed by Patricia Urquiola for Mutina and available in the United States exclusively through Stone Source. Azulej won the 2013 Wallpaper Design Award for Best Trend.

The collection’s material composition, which is inspired by hydraulic cement, combined with its digital print glazing, offers a modern take on ancient handcrafted majolica tiles. Tonal variations in the glaze, as well as the layered complexity of the patterns themselves, reference the handcrafted nature of classic majolica. The horizontal, vertical and diagonal patterns furnish versatility in application — supporting patchwork compositions or carefully constructed repeats.

About Patricia Urquiola

Patricia Urquiola’s professional career began in Italy, influenced by figures such as Bruno Munari, the intellectual founding father of the Milan school. Patricia considers herself a Spaniard, or rather an Asturian of Basque descent. Urquiola trained at the Polytechnic Universities of Madrid and Milan. In Milan she worked with Vico Magistretti and Achille Castiglioni before opening her own studio there in 2001. She alternates product design projects for major international companies – from Alessi to B&B Italia, Moroso, De Padova, Rosenthal and Axor, to mention but a few – with architecture projects for private homes, hotels and showrooms. Patricia’s work has earned her numerous international awards: the Wallpaper Design Awards in 2006 and 2013, Elle Decoration International Design Award, and Designer of the Year for the first time in 2003 and several times in the following years, as in 2009 with Mutina Déchirer collection. Her creations, including Déchirer have been selected for ADI Design Index and The International Design Yearbook.

ABRASION RESISTANCE

High

This material has relatively high abrasion resistance. It rates as a 7 or higher on the Mohs scale. Quartzite or granite typically fall into this range. This material is less likely to scratch than marble, limestone, onyx, slate, etc.

ABSORPTION

Low

This material is virtually non-porous. No sealer is required and it is less likely to stain.

ACID SENSITIVITY

Moderate

This material is moderately sensitive to acids. Generally, acid etching will be less visible on lighter stones and honed surfaces. The finish will patina over time. If acid etching is a concern, select a minimally sensitive material.

FREEZE-THAW

Vertical Exteriors

Due to this material's texture, its Abrasion Resistance rating, color fastness and tensile strength, this material is suitable for vertical exterior applications where freeze-thaw cycles are a concern. Use TCNA standards for setting in exteriors and consult an engineer regarding fastening systems and tensile strength required for your project. This material is not suitable for exterior paving applications.
